Dr. Masaaki Oikawa graduated from the Kitasato University, School of Veterinary Medicine, Towada, Aomori, Japan, in 1970. He then served as Researcher and Anatomic Pathologist at the Equine Research Institute, Japan Racing Association. He received his PhD in “Pathomorphological approach on mechanisms of immune deficiency diseases of neonatal foals: Histopathological observations of the extremely small thymes and villous hypoplasia of the small intestine”, in 1990.
Dr. Oikawa was appointed Professor in the Laboratory of Large Animal (Equine) Internal Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, Kitasato University, Japan, in 2006. He went on to work as Civilian Veterinarian, Veterinary Clinic, U. S. Army Veterinary Corps, Public Health Command-Japan. Dr. Oikawa has recently been appointed, Head of Pathology Unit at the Equine Veterinary Medical Center.
A certified member of the Japanese College of Veterinary Pathologists for 19 years, Dr. Oikawa has conducted autopsies as Pathologic Anatomist from 1970 to 2013 on approximately 5,000 - 6,000 cases in Thoroughbred horses, mainly racing horses, broodmares, stallion, foals and fetuses. Dr. Masa is the author
and co-author of 130 articles and has been involved in research for the last 48 years.
